August news letter

Good day to all the Scorpions. Firstly welcome to all the new students that joined us in August. Hope you will have a great time at SMAA-George and that what you or your children will learn, be used in a positive constructive manner and help develop you as a better, more disciplined person. August has been a busy month with many activities that took place. With the long school holiday behind our back and the exams starting very soon, September will be only busier!!!

We started our month off with the Annual National Woman’s day celebrations where SMAA- George’s instructors and a few senior students gave a self defence seminar at the George Airport to all the available female staff of the airport.  The fact that it was a public holiday didn’t stop the ladies from attending the workshop and boy, was it fun!! Please read more on the event in the “Woman’s day 2010 @ George Airport” post on the website. Once again thank you to all the guys and girls that helped with the workshop.

We had some good and bad news as well this month. Sensei Jonathan returned from a 3 day internationally recognised WAKO judging and refereeing seminar which gives him international credibility to ref and coach at tournaments (this is the good news).Well done!!!

Unfortunately towards the end of the month Sensei Jonathan resigned from Scorpions Martial Arts Academy as he will now be joining one of our neighbouring academies as a student/instructor. Thanks for all the positive contributions you made to our academy and good luck with the future (that was the bad news).

We had also been preparing FULL STEAM for tournaments that were to follow later in August and September. The first tournament that took place was a Kickboxing Development Tournaments for all the Martial Arts Academies in the SWD that are affiliated to SAAKA (South African Armature Kickboxing Association) that took place on Friday 27 August at the Scorpions Dojo. Well done to each and every one of the students that took part in the tournament. You are all very brave and for some it took more tan other. But never the less, we are proud of ALL of you and know it will only be better from now on!! Please read more on the event in the “Development Tournament for SWD Kickboxing @ the Scorpions Dojo” post on the website.

The next tournament will be held on the 11th of September in Cape Town for the MMA guys. Good luck to James, Morne and David with your fights. You guys worked hard and you will reap the benefits. More results on this event in next month’s news letter. There will also be a Kickboxing Tournament in George on the 25th of September for all SAAKA clubs in our region. This will be a hard one with all the formats taking place on the day. Good luck to everybody with the preparation for the tournament and trust you guys will bring home the gold!! More information on the tournament will follow closer to the date.

The website itself is doing excellent and we have a lot of frequent visitors. Thank you to everybody supporting, following and yes, even you guys sitting there and SPYING on us right now. It all is simply just pushing up our ratings and popularity as a successful established Martial Arts Academy!!! THANKS GUYS AND GIRLS.

There was no Guest Instructor for August but there was one scheduled for September. More info on the seminar in the next issue. We would like to congratulate the following people that have and will still celebrate their birthdays:

Congratulations to Jordan Hulbert for being selected as the Student of the Month for August 2010. You really deserved it for your dedication and perseverance with your training and your enthusiasm and interest in Martial Arts is a inspiration to many.

Please ensure that you place all orders for equipment and clothing well in advance as we don’t always have enough/correct stock. We are looking at doing it once a month in a bulk order as it will be easier and faster to obtain. Down payment options are available, but with a 50% deposit. Please talk to us for an alternative arrangement for payment and ordering of clothing, equipment and subs. Subs are to be paid latest before the 4th of each month for that month. Once again feel free to make alternative arrangements with us for payment of any moneys should the need be.

That is it from us for now, so have an excellent month and keep up the good work. Attend your classes and give only the best you can give. And remember what I always tell you guys “You only cheat yourself and not me” And as my father always said “Be good. If not, at least be good at it

Regards

TAPOUT Academy- Knysna visits Scorpions MAA

Spring season kicked off with some good ground work on the 1st of September when Marlon Baptista and a few of his students from TAPOUT Academy – Knysna, came to George to give us here at SMAA- George a visit. The guys from T.U.F.F joined in on the fun that was to follow.

Marlon, who origanaly trained with Wikus Swart from TAPOUT ACADEMY in Johannesburg, has year of experiance in the arts of Aikido, Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Capaewero, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA. He re located to Knysna a while ago and started TAPOUT Academy- Knysna.

We started off with some good clinch work for control of your opponant as well as setting up “your next move” where he kept a watchfull eye on the guys and adjusted here and there where he felt it could better the technique.

Marlon then concentrated and spent some time on the Triangle Choke with the guys, showing that size doesn’t matter when you would like to apply the choke and that it only takes some adjustment here and there to make sure you land the choke correctly or efficiantly!

Poor Jordan was manhandled on the night, but all worth the pains and strains the next day as the information was GOLDEN!!! The other guys attemted the technique and even us “BIG GUYS” with legs the size of the “normal persons” middle, could comfortably apply the choke.

After the chokes, we went on to some Armbar aplications..

and then we did some freestyle Brazilian Jiu Jitsu sparring to end the night off and let the guys test each others skill on the floor.

Once again thanks to Marlon and the guys from  TAPOUT Academy-Knysna that came through to us. We really enjoyed it and learned lots from you.

Development tournament for SWD Kickboxing at the Scorpions Dojo

On Friday 27 August 2010, Scorpions MAA hosted a Kickboxing development tournament for all the first timers within clubs registered to SAAKA (South African Armature Kickboxing Association) in SWD.

Fighters from Dynamic Mixed Fighting, Eagles Fighting Academy, DMF Moreson, T.U.F.F Academy and Scorpions MAA-George took part in the tournament with some real good fights that took place. Fighters with ages ranging from 6 years up to 45 years old took part in the tournament.

There were so many talented fighters on the day and it’s exiting to think that so many new fighters will be entering the “fighting stream” and enter into coming tournaments. Semi Contact and Light Contact were the only two modes fighters competed in just to get those “feet wet”.

Thanks to all the instructors/couches/officials that brought their fighters and that helped with judging and table work. Without you guys, our fighters wont be able to recieve proper training to compete and to gain the required experiance and confidence to practice and  in future teach Kickboxing
